THIS IS HOW TO CELEBRATE NATIONAL PARKS ALL YEAR LONG
National Park Week is a celebration of America's natural treasures, and there's no better time to immerse yourself in the beauty and wonder of these pristine landscapes. The week focusing on the USA National Parks can be a great reason to get the planning and excitement around visiting parks all year long regardless if solo or sharing with others. Whether you're a seasoned explorer or a first-time visitor, here are five ways to enhance your National Park experience and make lasting memories.
5 Ways to Make the Most of A Park Visit
Discover Hidden Gems: Every National Park is filled with hidden treasures waiting to be uncovered. Before your visit, take some time to research the park you'll be exploring. Look for lesser-known trails, scenic viewpoints, or unique activities that will make your experience unforgettable. Whether it's a secluded waterfall, a historic landmark, or a rare species of wildlife, there's always something new to discover in our National Parks.
Volunteer or Practice Conservation: Give back to the parks that give us so much by volunteering your time and energy. Many National Parks offer volunteer opportunities for individuals or groups looking to make a difference. Whether you're helping with trail maintenance, participating in a beach cleanup, or assisting with wildlife monitoring, your efforts will contribute to the preservation of these precious landscapes for future generations to enjoy.
Embrace Innovation and History: National Parks are not only showcases of natural beauty but also repositories of history and innovation. Take some time to learn about the innovative projects that were undertaken when the park was established and how they have shaped the landscape we see today. From the construction of iconic landmarks to the implementation of sustainable practices, these stories of innovation will deepen your appreciation for these incredible places.
Engage the Next Generation: Inspire a love of nature and conservation in the next generation by involving youth in your National Park adventures. Whether you're a parent, teacher, or mentor, create an action plan to engage young people in learning about the importance of preserving our natural heritage. Plan activities like nature hikes, wildlife spotting, or educational programs to help them connect with the outdoors and become stewards of the land.
Capture Memories Through Art: National Parks have long been a source of inspiration for artists of all kinds. Take advantage of this creative muse by honing your artistic skills during your visit. Whether you're a painter, photographer, or poet, let the beauty of the park inspire your work. Experiment with different mediums, from watercolors to digital photography, and capture the essence of the landscape in your own unique way. Just remember to respect wildlife and keep a safe distance, especially during sensitive times like mating season.
By embracing these tips, you can make the most of National Park Week and create unforgettable memories that will last a lifetime whenever visiting a park or historical location on your next adventure. So pack your bags, lace up your hiking boots, and get ready to explore the wonders of America's National Parks!

Episode 180 Details
TOP 5 THINGS TO DO OUTDOORS IN APRIL
Take A Hike: Weather is warmer now and the first flowers of spring are blooming, go alone or with the family and explore a local nature trail.
Photograph Nature: From signs of spring to new baby animals to summer birds arriving daily; Nature Photography is a fun way to share the excitement of spring. With almost all carrying a cellphone, your camera is already in your pocket - now use it to capture life.
Windy? Fly A Kite: When is the last time you flew a kite, or have your children ever gotten the chance. April tends to have a few windy days so buy a kite for some fun.
Visit a Greenhouse or Botanical Garden: Once the weather warms, we all get the itch to be outside. On the days not so nice, take a stroll through a local greenhouse or botanical garden to become inspired on what your gardening plans might look like. A great way to educate yourself on the various plants that will thrive in your climate zone.
Enjoy A Bike Ride: Get the bicycle out, air up the tires and hit the trail or road. The weather is perfect for a sweatshirt or light jacket plus the addition of seeing nature along the way makes for a perfect biking combination… just don’t forget the helmet!
WHY COOK ON GAS GRIDDLE BBQ; HOW TO SEASON & MAINTAIN A GRIDDLE
Grilling in the bbq world or using a smoker has been a long lasting tradition when it comes to the outdoors. If you haven’t purchased a griddle to try, you might realize you are missing out. We jumped on the bandwagon of adding the outdoor propane griddle a few years back. As a result of the diversity, we now own two in different sizes.
The first purchase was a 4 burner propane gas Pit Boss Griddle. We chose this one for the front grease cleanout location as where the griddle stays on our cabin deck, that is more accessible.
The second purchase was a 17” propane gas Blackstone Griddle. After realizing how easy it was to cook all our meals on the larger version, we opted for a more compact one to take along camping, going to the lake or for picnics.
CONS OF BBQING: Regardless if it is a Griddle, Grill or Smoker; we have learned the same issue applies and that is providing an area with minimal wind. Now there are “windshields” one can make or build, but we have had to watch the wind regardless when using any of these. NOTE: Do not use a griddle, grill or smoker inside of buildings.
GRIDDLE SEASONING & MAINTENANCE
Once purchasing a griddle, before use it is an ABSOLUTE MUST that one reads the manufacturer’s booklet regarding the Preparation, Seasoning and Maintenance of the griddle to ensure the longevity of the cooking top but also so that food doesn't stick and tastes desirable.
5 Easy Steps To Season A Gas Griddle BBQ
Rust Removal: New or Old moisture may collect on the cooking surface causing a patch of rust or a rough spot. Scrub away any rust or rough spots using a Scotch Brite pad.
Clean Griddle: If the griddle is new from the factory, it may come with a thin oil coating. To clean us a small amount of mild dish soap in warm water to remove the factory coating. Proceed to also wipe off everything else after use with a clean damp cloth.
Seasoning A Griddle: A griddle must be seasoned before use. First turn all burners on high heat, allowing for the griddle cooking surface to begin changing color. Using high smoke point cooking oil like flaxseed, drizzle it all over the surface. Careful it is HOT. Have ready a pair of tongs or heat-resistant gloves, take a lint-free cloth as the goal is to evenly wipe or coat the entire cooking surface including the tight corners as well as the outside of the griddle surface.
Wait and Repeat 3x: This is a slow process, and needs to be repeated a minimum of three times. The oil will start to smoke with the burners being on High. Wait until you see that the smoke has stopped. Drizzle and wipe another coating of oil thoroughly. Repeat the process until there have been at least 3 applications. READ YOUR GRIDDLE SEASONING INSTRUCTIONS.
Coat To Protect: Once the initial oil seasoning is complete, turn the burners off so that the surface may cool to where it is warm to the touch. Using a lint free cloth, begin wiping a sealing product such as BuzzyWaxx (beeswax). Bacon Up - Bacon Grease, or manufacturer’s of griddles offer their own products. A thin coat is all that is needed, just make sure you reach all the corners.
After completing these 5 simple steps, your griddle is ready for breakfast, lunch or dinner! So now start slinging some hash, becoming your own hibachi backyard grill or even try baking cookies - ENJOY!

ROAD MAPS - WHY TO USE
Many of us have become addicted to our phones, have allowed electronics to replace much of what we use in life. What about finding your destination? Getting from one location to another. There are many reasons to make sure your vehicle always has a Road Map or Road Atlas. First reasons are simple, even though it seems there is cellphone or mobile phone service everywhere, in reality there is not. If you are traveling and your carrier goes down, your phone potentially could not navigate correctly. Also, there are many areas when on the back roads or touring the backcountry where there is no cell service and limited satellite reach too. Having that road map can result in you safely finding your destination.
Youth and road maps; love this combination. Encourage you to use road maps as improving cognitive skills in kids, children, youth as well as the older generation. Cognitive skills are ones to always try to keep sharp!

How To Wash Dog Skunk Sprayed & Hot Buys For Summer Adventure
Saturday Mar 23, 2024
Saturday Mar 23, 2024
Smell SKUNK? Love is in the air, and the smell comes along too. Learn about skunks and what to do if your dog is sprayed. Plus, Hot Buys & Gift Ideas to improve Summer Adventures. This is Rebecca Wanner aka 'BEC' and Jeff ‘Tigger’ Erhardt with The Bend Radio Show & Podcast, your news outlet for the latest in the Outdoors & Western Lifestyle!
Episode 177 Details
SKUNK! WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT SKUNKS BEFORE SPRAYED
Skunk mating season begins in February and continues until the end of March. Female skunks usually only have one litter each year. So why are we telling you this, because LOVE and awful smells are in the air this time of year during skunk breeding season!
What happens during skunk mating season?
During mating season, neighborhoods may notice an increase in skunk odors. A skunk can travel from up to six miles away to find a mate. When a male finds a female, she can discourage his advances by emitting an odor. The increased and pungent aroma is a sign of females repelling males in pursuit of the right mate.
Males spray each other as they fight over females for their love. Females will spray males they don't want to mate with, and the smell can reach up to a mile away.
DOG SPRAYED BY SKUNK? HERE’S HOW TO WASH YOUR DOG
Thankfully times have changed and you do not have to worry about having an enormous amount of tomato juice or a place to think about having such a bath. The best news is that you more than likely have the three ingredients needed to make a de-skunk shampoo in your home.
BEFORE YOU START - be sure to be wearing OLD CLOTHES and read the Important Key Warnings listed below!
Mix 3 to 4 parts 3% hydrogen peroxide to 1 part baking soda, along with a teaspoon of dish detergent.
Apply this mixture to your dog while it’s still bubbling
IMPORTANT KEY WARNINGS:
Do not use the solution near your dog’s eyes, and be careful when applying around the mouth.
Peroxide may bleach your dog’s fur, an effect that is especially noticeable on black or brown dogs.
Peroxide may also bleach any other material it comes in contact with, like clothing, towels or furniture.
LASTLY - remember that skunks can carry the rabies virus, so be sure to keep your dog always up to date on their rabies vaccinations.
HOT BUYS NOW: Gadgets for House, Cabin or Gift Ideas

TikTok & YouTube TRENDS TO STOP NOW
Safety does not sound fun, but safety is a necessity around the Farm, Ranch and Cabin!
No one truly wants to see anyone physically hurt, injured for life or have death be the result of unnecessary actions that could have been prevented. Often if one is to scroll through social media, it almost feels as though "Common Sense" has gone out the window! Trends on TikTok or YouTube, for example, of jumping out of moving tractors while filming oneself doing so to jumping off of UTVs at the cabin, might get a few likes or be the latest #challenge - Just STOP. Please STOP.
The actor/actress doing the activities - We get it! You are wanting the attention, be thought of as crazy or pushing limits; hate to break it to you - You are not achieving it. Instead you are risking your own life to become an instant sensation that will only be forgotten as soon as the daring act you took was overlooked. Ouch! We know - Truth Hurts.
The property owner of the machinery, UTV, or the land in which these acts are taking place - STOP THEM. Why? Because you are exposing yourself not just to the high risks of losing a loved one, if that's not scary enough in itself, but also opening yourself up to liability lawsuits as the actions did take place on your property, using your property, etc.
Now that we have your attention, make a change this year and STOP feeding into the social media challenges and trends that really are only making someone else money at your expense.

EASY IRISH SODA BREAD
Discovered for you, the perfect recipe for homemade Irish Soda Bread! Embrace the rich flavors of Irish tradition with just a few simple steps.
To start, gather 4 cups of flour, 4 tablespoons of white sugar, 1 teaspoon of baking soda, 1 tablespoon of baking powder, ½ teaspoon of salt, and ½ cup of softened margarine or butter. Combine these ingredients in a mixing bowl, creating the foundation of your bread.
Next, enrich the mixture with 1 cup of buttermilk, 1 egg, and if desired, 1 cup of raisins for a delightful twist. Blend all ingredients thoroughly until a dough forms.
Once mixed, gently knead the dough and shape it into a round loaf. Place it onto a baking sheet, ready to be transformed into a golden delight.
Before baking, don't forget the signature mark of Irish Soda Bread - carefully cut an "X" across the top of the loaf. Then, brush it with 1 beaten egg white to achieve that perfect finish.
Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit (190 degrees Celsius), and let the magic unfold as you bake your creation for 45 to 50 minutes.

PLAN NOW TO SEE THE TOTAL ECLIPSE & OTHER COSMIC WONDERS
Experience the Total Eclipse and other Epic Astronomy Views in 2024!
Get ready for an extraordinary celestial event coming your way! On Monday, April 8, 2024, North America will be graced with a total solar eclipse, turning day into night across a wide swath of the United States. AND what makes this Total Eclipse so incredibly noteworthy, because the next isn’t slated to happen for another 2 decades, 20 years. Whether you're in Southern California, Washington State, or the mountains of North Carolina, get set for a partial eclipse at the very least.
For the ultimate experience, position yourself beneath the path of totality, stretching from Northern Mexico through Texas, up to Maine, and beyond into Canada. According to astronomer Tyler Nordgren, a total eclipse is nothing short of otherworldly. As the moon completely obscures the sun, expect the sky to darken, colors to shift, and the brightest stars to emerge.
Nordgren recommends choosing a location you genuinely want to explore. Whether you're clouded out or not, being in a captivating setting enhances the experience. Just remember to pack your protective eyewear to safeguard your eyes during this awe-inspiring event.
As April 8 approaches, consider your ideal spot to witness nature's breathtaking display. Whether you're drawn to the rugged landscapes of Texas, the serene beauty of Maine, or the majestic badlands of North Dakota, the path of totality offers an array of captivating destinations.
Prepare for a day like no other—a day when the heavens align, and the universe unfolds its mysteries before your eyes. Mark your calendars, secure your viewing spot, and get ready to witness the total eclipse of 2024 in all its celestial glory.
Don't miss out on this extraordinary event. Plan your eclipse adventure today and prepare to be spellbound by the wonders of the universe. Just don’t forget your protective eyewear.
Be prepared as the Total Solar Eclipse, meaning complete darkness, is speculated to only last 3:30 minutes.

Super Harvest Moon Eclipse: September 17-18
A super moon occurs when the moon is the closest to the earth, and appears bigger and brighter than usual. In September, the super moon will be accompanied by a partial eclipse. While a supermoon is easy to spot from wherever you are, the eclipse will be visible from much of the Americas, Europe, and Africa.
A confluence of three popular lunar events will make for an exciting night of stargazing on the night of Tuesday, Sept. 17, into the early hours of Wednesday, Sept. 18. A partial lunar eclipse will coincide with the first super moon of the year, causing part of the moon to temporarily go dark as it passes through Earth's shadow.
Super Moon — October 17
The second and closest supermoon of 2024 will occur in October. During a supermoon, the moon can appear up to 14% larger and 30% brighter than when it is the farthest. There's no need for specialized equipment to view the moon, but a clear night sky and an unobstructed view will help.

ILLEGAL EAGLE FEATHER TRAFFICKING UNVEILED
FLATHEAD INDIAN RESERVATION, Mont. (KFYR) - Prosecutors say a Washington state man intends to plead guilty to helping kill some 3,600 birds, including eagles, and illegally selling their feathers. A judge issued an arrest warrant for a second suspect who failed to appear in court last month.
Such feathers are highly prized among many Native American tribes for use in sacred ceremonies and during pow-wows. The defendants are accused of selling eagle parts on a black market that has been a long-running problem for U.S. wildlife officials. Illegal shootings are a leading cause of golden eagle deaths, according to a recent government study. Immature golden eagle feathers are especially valued among tribes, and a tail set from one of the birds can sell for several hundred dollars, according to details disclosed during a separate trafficking case in South Dakota last year in which a Montana man was sentenced to three years in prison.
Prosecutors say Travis Branson and others killed the birds during a years-long “killing spree” on the Flathead Indian Reservation in Montana and elsewhere.
SPY CAMS IN VACATION RENTALS
According to the Daily Mail, 10% of vacation rentals come equipped with concealed surveillance cameras. These cameras are frequently camouflaged as ordinary items like chargers, smoke alarms, and TV soundbars. Travel experts recommend inspecting for absent screws, additional openings, and reflections that may indicate camera lenses. Rental platforms such as Airbnb enforce stringent regulations prohibiting hidden camera use.
BOMB WASHES UP ON BEACH
According to NBC, an old military bomb was recently found washed up on shore in California. A bomb squad was called in, confirming the explosive was inactive and then safely removed it from the beach.
MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE: SOUTH CAROLINA TO FRANCE
Who has thrown a message in a bottle, tossed it to the sea or ocean wondering if it’ll ever be found? A South Carolina fisherman dropped a bottle in the ocean three years ago. The bottle contained a letter and ribbons. The fisherman was shocked that it made its way to France.
Have you ever found a message in a bottle? Host Rebecca Wanner aka BEC once did while fishing along the Knife River in North Dakota. The bottle was an old glass pop bottle, and the message was a typewriter typed letter and dated 20 years old.
CORNHOLE PLAYERS EARN COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS
According to Deadspin, High schoolers are securing scholarships to play cornhole at the college level. Recently, two high school seniors signed letters of intent to join Winthrop University in North Carolina as cornhole players. These scholarships will cover half of their tuition costs. Both athletes are highly regarded, earning five-star ratings, and they represent the first students to commit to a college for cornhole.
As always here at The Bend Show, we encourage all ages to take up lifelong sports and activities. Cornhole is another great example, just as fishing, clay target shooting and archery, of an activity we can do all our lives and encourages us to do so while socializing with other people. Put down the phone and take up an activity this year!

McDonald’s recently unveiled a robot-run restaurant with no human staff. The futuristic location is in Australia, according to News.com, and has self-service kiosks, digital menu boards and food delivered by robots. McDonald’s hopes that this new concept will streamline their operations and provide more efficient dining experiences.
We hear often about worker shortages and more use of AI as well as seeing McDonald's locations are already using kiosks in the United States, now the question is when will this become the new “norm” in the USA? Stay prepared before going with a large group and learn the new technology out now at not just McDonalds but many other restaurants too. Hear how taking the time to stop "Smell the Roses" as the often said, has more relevance especially as a journey through life. If planning a long awaited vacation, have an idea of the sites to see but make sure to reserve time for impromptu stops along the adventure. See that roadside stand selling coconuts, PULL OVER and TRY! That is also part of the great memory making for you and your companions! Often it's the "little things", the moments that didn't go perfect on that long awaited trip that become the most reflected, laughed and cherished. Plus toss the fishing pole along too or if in a new area, reach out and spend the money to try "new waters" to you.
Too often it happens that the road you're traveling may very well be the ONLY time you travel it. So best to take it all in and then fondly remember those cherished memories!
