The poliowarrior's Podcast

Millions of Polio Survivors around the world are experiencing the highly debilitating symptoms of Post-Polio Syndrome and as Chair of a 'not for profit' charity we are working to raise the awareness of these symptoms and how they can be managed to alleviate some of the pain and extreme fatigue that they produce. My Podcast will talk about these symptoms and provide some ways of managing them. Although I am not medically trained I am a Polio Survivor living with these symptoms and want to ensure that every other survivor can benefit from many very experienced and qualified Physicians who have provided excellent methods and procedures to manage them. I hope you will follow me and share these Podcasts with as many Polio Survivors as you can. In this way we will be raising the awareness worldwide.

As we grow older our muscles and the neurons that drive them, become damaged and we must be very careful that we don't overuse or misuse them.
The Polio virus damaged almost 98% of every Polio Survivor's motor neurons. If only up to 48% of the neuron was damaged then there would be very little, or no noticeable effect on the muscle.
However, as the level of damage increases, so the effect also increases with disabilities, until at 100% the muscle is paralyzed.

Many survivors of the Polio pandemic of the 1940s and 50s have stated that they have faced some moments of PTSD when looking at, hearing, or experiencing symptoms of the Coronavirus. There are so many similarities to the Polio experience and the subsequent Post-Polio Syndrome, that it is difficult not to experience some of these PTSD moments. Please excuse the computer generated voice over. My PPS includes difficulty in swallowing and talking.........

Post-Polio Sequelae is a general name given to a number of terms describing the many symptoms that Polio Survivors are facing some 35 years after the initial Polio Virus attack.
These terms include, PPS, Post-Polio Syndrome, and The Late Effects of Poliomyelitis.
This episode talks through the many symptoms and helps to answer many of the questions that Polio Survivors and their families and friends are asking.
Please accept my apologies for the state of my voice which, because the virus damaged the motor neurons within my throat, and a career in lecturing, is now becoming more and more hoarse.

I am going to produce a series of podcasts describing how together we can relieve the symptoms of Post-Polio Syndrome. PPS is not inevitable and is simply the result of overuse, and/or misuse of your muscles and the motor neurons that control them.
We were all told when leaving hospital to follow the mantra 'Use it or lose it', when we should have been told to 'Conserve to Preserve'.
