From FRANCE- An interview with Louise Wateridge, UNWRA (United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine) spokesperson, who had just returned from six weeks on the ground in Gaza. She describes the situation in Rafah before the current attacks, with severe overcrowding and almost no food. In 6 days most of the Palestinians fled in terror to Al-Mawasi under constant bombardment. UNWRA and the World Food Program tried to provide food but aid trucks had been blocked at the borders for a week. Louise does not believe that the US pier will be able to reverse the starvation. UNRWA had to close its doors in East Jerusalem following an arson attack by chanting Israeli demonstrators on its grounds- the UN and EU strongly condemned this attack. Putin is visiting the Chinese President to further their record economic alliances- China denies American accusations that it supplies arms to Russia.
From JAPAN- Residents of Okinawa continue to demand a larger pullout of US military and deployment of missiles in their area. Hiroshima held its annual reading of the names of the 339,227 people who died from the US bomb in 1945. Atomic bomb survivors launched a protest with the US over recent comments by Senator Lindsey Graham who likened the Israel Gaza conflict to the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on steroids- saying it was the right decision. Japan's electricity demand is about to soar because of generative Artificial Intelligence server farms. The navies of the US and Taiwan conducted another covert military drill, increasing tension with China. Netanyahu says the Rafah ground offensive will last weeks, not months, as the US prepares to send another billion dollar round of weapons to Israel.
From CUBA- Dozens of areas in Mexico experienced record high temperatures last week, up to 124 degrees F. Brazil has been hit with extreme rainfall and tragic flooding. At least 500 medical personnel have been killed in Gaza, along with 35,000 Gazans, mostly women and children. Pro-Palestinian demonstrations continue across colleges around the world.

“The scariest thing for non-Jewish Americans in talking about Palestinian self-determination is the fear of being or sounding anti-Semitic. The people of Israel are suffering, and Jewish people have a long history of oppression. We still have some responsibility for that, but I think it's important to draw a firm distinction between the policies of Israel, as a state, and Jewish people. That's kind of a no-brainer, but there is very strong pressure to conflate the two.”

This week's show has an in-depth interview with a US Sate Department senior official who resigned because of weapon sales to Israel. The State Dept announced Monday that US weapons were used by the Israeli Defense Force in gross violations of human rights. The US Leahy law prohibits the sale of weapons where they are used in such violations, like the murder of Palestinian-American press reporter Sharin Abu Akleh in May of 2022. There is a debate at The Paris Institute of Political Studies in hopes of lessening forceful student uprisings in France. Israel says they are opening the northern Erez border crossing for supplies to Palestinians- Shaina Low of the Norwegian Refugee Council describes the real needs in Gaza. A report on why US youth are disillusioned with the Presidential election.
This week's show features stories from France 24 and Radio Deutsche-Welle.
http://youthspeaksout.net/swr240503.mp3 (29:00)
From FRANCE- France has a weekly interview show called tete a tete which goes in depth on a subject. The host Marc Perelman interviewed Josh Paul who served for 11 years in the US State Department overseeing weapons sales to foreign countries. He resigned in October to protest sales to Israel as the war on Gaza raced ahead. The State Dept announced Monday that US weapons were used by 5 units of the Israeli Defense Force in gross violations of human rights. The US Leahy law prohibits the sale of weapons where they are used in such violations, like the murder of Palestinian-American press reporter Sharin Abu Akleh in May of 2022. All of these named violations occurred well before the October 7thinvasion of Gaza. No US administration has ever curbed arm sales to Israel despite it being against US law. Josh says there is a culture of fear in the State Dept, and that the campus protests are a response to concerns over the war just being brushed aside by government officials. Europe has seen protests about the Israeli war on Palestine as well and there is a debate as I write this at The Paris Institute of Political Studies in hopes of lessening forceful student uprisings in France.
From GERMANY- Israel says they are opening the northern Erez border crossing for supplies to Palestinians- Shaina Low of the Norwegian Refugee Council describes the real needs in Gaza. Netanyahu has told Blinken that he will not accept any notions of a permanent ceasefire and will invade Rafah. Then a report on why US youth are disillusioned with the Presidential election.

This week's show starts with climate change in China, Tik Tok says it will not sell, an interview with Jeremy Scahill on the New York Times and passive headlines, an interview with Columbia University professor Rasheed Khaladi on student uprisings, Colombian President Petro under pressure for wanting universal healthcare, free education, and pensions.
This week's show features stories from NHK Japan, France 24, and Radio Havana Cuba.
http://youthspeaksout.net/swr240426.mp3 (29:00)
From JAPAN- China has been swamped with record breaking rainfall, with extensive flooding and numerous landslides. The chief executive of Tik Tok says that they protect user information and will not sell the application. Satellite photos have revealed tens of thousands of tents Israel has set up in south Gaza to evacuate Palestinian civilians from Rafah before the invasion.
From FRANCE- Global military spending has soared to new heights, almost 2 1/2 trillion dollars, with the US accounting for one trillion dollars or 37% of the total. France 24 broadcast 2 long interviews this week that I struggled with choosing only one. The first was from a program called Scoop speaking with Jeremy Scahill from the Intercept on the NYT telling its journalists to limit the use of terms like "genocide" and "ethnic cleansing" and to avoid using the term "occupied territory" in reporting on the war on Palestine- you will hear a short excerpt from that. The other long interview was with Rasheed Khalidi, American historian, and Edward Said Professor of Modern Arab Studies at Columbia University. The topic was that the West was on the wrong side of history for suppressing students in the US and Europe who are demanding a ceasefire in Gaza. He talks about Columbia University's history of student protests, the moral urgency of stopping the war in Gaza, and the problem with the mainstream media echoing the government line. He points out that a large proportion of the protestors are Jewish as are scores of professors who are also protesting. He points out that the Republican Party under Trump is hypocritical, since Trump proclaimed as good people the neo-fascists who marched in Virginia a few years ago chanting "Jews will not replace us."
From CUBA- Colombian President Petro, under pressure for promoting universal healthcare, free education, and pensions, will be present at rallies for International Workers Day, on MayDay. Thousands of pro-Palestinian demonstrators marched in Madrid last Sunday to oppose arms sales to Israel. A flotilla of ships carrying food and supplies for Palestine is being prepared in Turkey.

This week's show begins with a UK plan to ban cigarette sales to anyone born from 2009 on,many press reviews on the Iran/Israel conflict, Modi's election in India, determining where to bury nuclear waste in Japan, and antiwar protests in the US,
This week's show features stories from France 24, NHK Japan, and Radio Havana Cuba.
http://youthspeaksout.net/swr240419.mp3 (29:00)
From FRANCE- This week France 24 had many important international press reviews and so half of todays SWR come from there. The first is about the proposed law in the UK that will ban anyone born in 2009 or later from ever buying cigarettes- it is very controversial but may be implemented. Of course the bigger story has been the retaliatory strikes on Israel that Iran attempted- first the Middle East press from Israel to Iran. Then the international press from the Guardian in the UK and the US. Next Zelensky criticized the West for directly defending Israel while treating Ukraine differently. The Washington Post reported on Ukraine bombing Russian oil refineries. Liz Truss who was the UK Prime Minister for 49 days is backing Donald Trump and would like to lead the Tory party again. The Jordan Times says they intercepted Iranian missiles to protect themselves not Israel. The UK based Middle East Eye points out that Jordan has the largest number of Palestinian refugees. Then several reports on the election for Prime Minister in India- the election will take about 2 months and Modi is generally considered a certain winner. Press reviews include how Modi made India a much larger international force, how human rights have diminished under his rule, and how he had the current opposition leaders arrested and prosecuted.
From JAPAN- Japanese firm Nippon Steel is in the process of acquiring US Steel though Biden is opposed to it- the shareholders voted to complete the sale. A report on the process of determining where to bury nuclear waste in Japan. Australia has announced a new defense strategy including a much larger budget. An Israeli poll found 70% of the citizens oppose a counterstrike against Iran. The US Pacific Fleet provocatively flew through the Taiwan Strait.
From CUBA- Venezuelan President Maduro says the US has not lifted the sanctions that it said would end a year ago. Americans demanding a ceasefire in Gaza blocked major roads in California, Illinois, New York, and Oregon. Police in Germany raided and shut down a pro-Palestinian conference in Berlin.

This week's show begins with senior women win a landmark case in the EU Human Rights Court, an interview with the head of the Norwegian Refugee Council about Gaza, the EU reforms the asylum policy, more details about Israeli use of Artificial Intelligence to kill Palestinians, and Palestine is moving forward in becoming a state in the UN rather than just an observer.
This week's show features stories from Radio Deutsche-Welle, France 24, and Radio Havana Cuba.
From GERMANY- A group of Swiss women age 65 and over won a landmark case at the EU Human Rights court- they said that the Swiss government was not taking action to protect their health from increasing heat caused by human induced climate change. At the ICJ Nicaragua has charged Germany has aided in genocide in the Gaza Strip. RDW has a weekly show called the Conflict Zone hosted by Tim Sebastian. His guest this week was Jen Egeland head of the Norwegian Refugee Council. Jen describes Rafah as the largest, most crowded refugee camp on earth. He says that the man-made famine 1.1 million people are experiencing could be overcome if Israel would stop holding up relief trucks at the borders. He says the US, Germany, and the UK need to stop providing the weapons killing the Palestinians and to pressure Israel to allow relief trucks in. He says the world sees industrial strength hypocrisy when the West deplores Russian actions in Ukraine but aids Israel in starving and destroying Gaza.
From FRANCE- EU lawmakers approved a package of reforms to their asylum policy, which generally makes it much more difficult to receive asylum and easier to deport those seeking refuge. Then Benjamin Jensen from the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington DC gives more details on how the Israeli Defense Forces employ Artificial Intelligence to determine which Palestinians to kill, and who they associate with.
From CUBA- At the UN, Palestine is moving forward in applying for recognition as a state rather than as an observer. The Ecuador police broke into the Mexican embassy to arrest the former Vice President of Ecuador who was seeking political asylum there.

This week's show begins with an esteemed political scientist on Assange, Russia and Ukraine, Germany mostly legalizes cannabis, several perspectives on the Israeli murder of international aid workers, and IDF use of AI to target Palestinians.
This week's show features stories from Going Underground, Radio Deutsche-Welle, and France 24.
http://youthspeaksout.net/swr240405.mp3 (29:00)
From GOING UNDERGROUND- Afshin interviewed Prof Stephen Walt, a political scientist currently serving as the Robert and Renee Belfer Professor of international relations at the Harvard Kennedy School. In the three excerpts I have extracted he begins by giving his reasons for supporting Julian Assange. He then explains why he says that Russia was provoked into invading Ukraine. He then dispels the American notion that if Ukraine does not defeat Russia that they will follow by invading western Europe.
From GERMANY- First, the partial legalization of cannabis came into effect this week in Germany, with a unique plan for distribution through so-called social membership clubs. The Israeli murder of 7 international aid workers was heavily criticized across the world, which the Israeli government said was an accident- the US NGO World Central Kitchen says that they were targeted as were the other 190 aid workers killed in Gaza. The Biden administration authorized another multi-billion dollar weapons package for Israel, including 1800 one ton bombs that are allegedly the source of the mass casualty events in Gaza.
From FRANCE- Members of the UK parliament have called for a suspension of arms sales to Israel, and the majority of the population want a ban enacted. An international press review on the murder of the food aid volunteers in Gaza and the result that charities have halted their Gaza missions. Then a report on the Israeli military use of AI to generate targets, labeling 37,000 Palestinians as members of Hamas or jihadist operatives.

This week's show begins who is responsible for the massacre in Russia, the ceasefire in Gaza resolution is not vetoed by the US, Julian Assange is given a temporary reprieve, and war preparations in the Sea of China continue.
This week's show features stories from Radio Deutsche-Welle, Radio Havana Cuba, France 24, and NHK Japan.
http://youthspeaksout.net/swr240329.mp3 (29:00)
From GERMANY- Following the massacre of 137 people in Russia at a concert, the so-called ISIS-K claimed responsibility- but Putin and his government believe they were commissioned by Ukraine and the US. On Monday the UN Security Council passed a resolution calling for the release of hostages and a ceasefire in Gaza- the US abstained from vetoing the unanimous decision, much to Israeli disappointment.
From CUBA- Hamas denounced the international silence on the continuing attacks on and destruction of hospitals in Gaza. UN Secretary-General Guterres spoke in Egypt saying the only way to reduce the famine occurring in Gaza is to allow the relief trucks in, and calling for an immediate ceasefire and release of hostages. Venezuela has created a High Commission on Fascism to be presented as a bill in the UN. In 1990 the US government began transmissions of anti-Cuban propaganda called Radio and TV Marti. A british court ruled that Julian Assange cannot be extradited to the US without a guarantee that he will receive First Amendment rights and will not face the death penalty.
From FRANCE- First a speech by Stella Assange, wife of Julian, given after the judges ruling in the case on Tuesday. Then a brief synopsis of what Assange says was the purpose of Wikileaks. France 24
From JAPAN- Japanese defense forces are being trained on a US destroyer to use the 400 US made Tomahawk cruise missiles they are purchasing. Taiwan has finished building 6 warships, dubbed aircraft carrier killers. China filed a complaint at the WTO over US government tax incentives for buyers of electric vehicles. People in India are protesting the incarceration of a key opposition leader before general elections.

This week's show starts with Finland still the happiest country on earth, Canada halts arm sales to Israel, an excellent interview with Daniel Levy on Israel and the US, farmers continue to block roads in Europe, and what will the earth look like in 20-30 years after more global warming.
This week's show features stories from France 24, Going Underground, and Radio Deutsche-Welle.
http://youthspeaksout.net/swr240322.mp3 (29:00)
From FRANCE- For the 7th year in a row Finland was voted the happiest country in the world, while the US dropped to 23rd, its lowest spot since the poll began. There has been strong criticism of Netanyahu in the Israeli press. Canada is to halt all arms shipments to Israel, joining Belgium, Italy, and the Netherlands- however the US supplies 69% and Germany supplies 30% of all Israeli weapon imports.
From GOING UNDERGROUND- Afshin spoke with Daniel Levy, a peace negotiator who was part of the Taba and Oslo summits, and currently serves as the president of the US/ Middle East Project. They discuss the role that the US plays in enabling the Israeli war in Palestine. Levy says that the US has global political framing for the Middle East region, with Israel and a few Arab states as allies. And that the US has a history of colonizing many parts of the world besides North America. He says America has the leverage to cease the war but it would never happen with a single phone call, but sustained actions. They discuss the possibility of a regional war beyond US/UK bombing in Yemen, how Israel has developed impunity for actions in the region, and the need to break the US and West monopoly on ending conflicts. Does the world need an effective World Court, and should the global south be included in creating worldwide order.
From GERMANY- The US government has found no evidence of brain injuries from the so-called Havana Syndrome, first alleged in Cuba in 2016. Farmers across Europe are continuing their road blockage protests against what they say is too much government overreach, environmental regulation, and forced importation of duty-free Ukrainian produce flooding their markets. A climate researcher and delegate to the climate change conferences from Stanford University describes what the world might look like in 20-30 years if we continue on our current environmental path.

This week's show begins with the Indian government allowing asylum from neighboring nations excluding Muslims, what adaptations are underway in France for the changing climate, Israeli protestors are stopping relief truck deliveries to Gaza, and gang rule in Haiti.
This week's show features stories from NHK Japan, France 24, Radio Deutsche-Welle, and Radio Havana Cuba.
http://youthspeaksout.net/swr240315.mp3 (29:00)
From JAPAN- March 11 was the 13th anniversary of the Great Japan Earthquake and Tsunami which devastated the Fukushima nuclear power plant- since last August diluted radioactive waste water has been discharged into the Pacific Ocean. The Indian government has announced a controversial citizenship law, allowing asylum from neighboring countries while excluding Muslims.
From FRANCE- Neither the EU or France has made adaptations for the evolving climate change- what preparations are needed to cope with the increasing temperatures and their effects on humans, the land, and agriculture.
From GERMANY- The IEA says a near record high release of methane was observed last year. Relief supplies in Gaza have been bombed by Israel. Failing attempts to curb the starvation in Gaza, like air drops and and the yet to arrive ships, are necessary because truck deliveries are being blocked in Israel by civilian protestors. Turmoil in Haiti has grown, the US and Caribbean nations want to appoint a new government, and there are organized gangs controlling the Capitol.
From CUBA- The Speaker of the lower house of the Russian Parliament said that nations supporting the extradition of Julian Assange to the US will cease to be legal. The UN Relief agency has called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.
