Many disappereances have occured in the Bermuda Triangle, large things likes ships or entire airplanes have vanished without a trace in a single area. It could be explained a number of ways, it could be weather or could be some sort of alien base. 

Lars was unable to fly home from his trip, on his extra day he called family, worried about his own safety. While boarding his flight Lars takes off running into the woods and is never seen again.
