Oh, you thought we were done!? After we finished talking with Aisha, we still had thoughts to get off, so enjoy this extended conversation as we get to more quotes from director Kobi Libbi, dig deeper into some of the supposed themes, and ask if Justice Smith's character stumbled on a copy of Wretched of the Earth after getting kicked out of the society.
Some news! We're going to be live in NY and Baltimore coming up in April and May! Our first show is coming up April 14th at the Brooklyn Comedy Collective. Tickets are going on sale soon, so if you'll be in BK, come through and see us!

You asked and we delivered. A movie that should have been funny and insightful but instead turned out to be one of the most confusing films in recent memory, The American Society of Magical Negroes is something we have to talk about. Before you ask, it's everything you feared and maybe a bit more. We break it all down so you don't have to see it, including some intriguing quotes from Kobi Libbi and our thoughts on ways this concept could have worked.

Please check out Aisha's review here, and follow on the socials for more of her wonderful thoughts on film and more. In fact, you can buy a book filled with them in Wannabe: Reckonings with the Pop Culture That Shapes Me . And of course check out NPR's Pop Culture Happy Hour wherever you get your podcasts.

Oh, and we aren't done. Cameron and Jordan had another whole round of thoughts and more quotes from the director to parse so part two is coming soon!

Award season has come to an end, so we look back at a past awards  darling to see how it holds up today. Spoiler, it doesn't. 2009's Invictus tells the story of Nelson Mandela and the 1995 South African World Cup rugby team and earned Oscar nominations for both Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon. Lucky for us, Fatimah Gilliam (author of Race Rules: What Your Black Friend Won't Tell You) is here to help us break it all down!
We discuss Mandela's rugby obsession, the lack of apartheid in a movie about apartheid, and what exactly this movie wants us to feel good about?
You have to check out Fatimah's book! As she says, go order it a Black bookstore, go request at your local library, and rate it on Amazon to help work that algorithm! You can also find Fatimah on Twitter @fatimahgilliam and on Instagram @fatimah_gilliam
We have live show stuff coming soon! April we'll have two shows, one in Brooklyn and one in Baltimore and then the following month in May we'll be back in NY for a show in Manhattan. Dates are coming soon, but come out and see your boys! Follow us on Twitter at @white_pod for more details! We'll see you soon!

The Phantom (Feat. Tarik Davis)

Wednesday Feb 28, 2024

Wednesday Feb 28, 2024

Today! We travel back to simpler times, before cinematic universes, to a world of ridiculous costumes, confused racial stereotypes, and a villain who only operates at 10. We're talking 1996's The Phantom, and we're joined by the amazing Tarik Davis (The Amber Ruffin Show).
We talk about the poorly named "rope people", if The Phantom actually has any powers, and his ghost dad's bizarre interest in his sex life. We also discuss the worst Black History Month job offers.
We can't say enough about Tarik. Incredibly funny and knowledgeable, you can follow all he has going on at his website, tarikdavis.com. Also, be on the look out for his short film Doc: Race, Revolution, Relativity, & The Confessions of A Time Traveling Terrorist. You can also follow him on Twitter and IG @Tarikrdavis.
As always, follow us on Twitter @white_pod and hit us up at whitepeoplewontsaveyoupod@gmail.com We'll be back in two weeks with the hosts of the Blerdy Massacre to talk A Quiet Place Part II.

A white supremacist romantic thriller? Say it ain't so. Today we discuss 1988's Betrayed, a movie that asks, "is it love if you don't hunt a Black man with an uzi in the middle of the night"?
We're joined by the fabulous Chauncey K. Robinson to talk about if Tom Berenger understands kissing, if Debra Winger is the worst undercover agent, and much more!
Many thank to Chauncey! Be sure to check her out at @Mschaunceykr on Twitter and subscribe to her excellent Youtube Channel. And be sure to be on the look out for her upcoming docu-series Production Tales From Hell from Dead Meat Productions where she'll detail some of the behind the scenes of some of the most notorious horror movie productions.
We're working on some exciting stuff on our end. Live shows, some video and Tiktok content, and more. Be sure to lookout for everything over at @white_Pod on Twitter and be sure to write in at whitepeoplewontsaveyoupod@gmail.com

American Fiction

Thursday Feb 01, 2024

Thursday Feb 01, 2024

We take a break from the never ending parade of white saviors to talk about a movie we actually liked, American Fiction. Written and directed by Cord Jefferson, and starring Jeffery Wright, Sterling K. Brown, Erika Alexander, and Traci Ellis Ross, it recently was nominated for 4 Academy Awards.
We talk about the amazing cast, our thoughts on the message of the movie, parallels to Bamboozled and 40 Year Old Version and much more!
Do yourself a favor and run out to see this movie, definitely lives up to the hype! And if you have seen it, let us know what you think at @white_pod on Twitter and at whitepeoplewontsaveyoupod@gmail.com
